Where God Heals Hurts, Habits, or Hang-Ups

Here is a personal story from one of the members of our Celebrate Recovery (CR) community, shared with permission.

Changing habits and dealing with hurts that I have been carrying around for many years is difficult, but Celebrate Recovery keeps me grounded and accountable toward God’s purpose for my life. I am learning that no matter how old one is or what season of life they are in, submitting to God one day at a time will break the chains of a very strong will like mine and turn stubbornness into humility. I now have a true and earnest belief that God exists, that I matter to Him and that He has the power to help me recover. All I need to do is admit that I am powerless over my addictions and compulsive behaviors, and God will step in to help manage my life. Sound easy? It is not, and I can’t do it alone. As it says in Philippians 4:13, “For I can do everything God asks me to with the help of Christ who gives me the strength and the power.”

Participating in CR has caused me to be more genuine, vulnerable and open with others. Since CR is a safe environment, I do not worry about what people think of me. I am more aware of when I say or do something that is hurtful, and am ready and willing to admit when I am wrong and to make amends quickly rather than allowing resentments to build.

CR has taught me that sharing my weaknesses not only helps toward becoming the person that God intends for me to be by allowing Him to transform weaknesses into strengths, but also helps to encourage someone who might be going through the same thing I am going through. Sharing my weaknesses, coming alongside others in theirs, and rejoicing in victories along the way are how I can help bring the Good News to others.

To the newcomer, if you are feeling the nudge to explore how to grow in your recovery, committing to CR will change your life and help heal areas that cripple your walk with God. The work in CR is not easy, but the rewards are worth the effort.

At Celebrate Recovery in Davis, we welcome anyone, no matter what their issues are. We strive to practice focusing on our own recovery, no gossip or fixing one another, maintaining anonymity and confidentiality, and giving each other support in a Christ-centered way. We listen and pray for each other. It is an incredible journey of hope and restoration.

CR Davis meets every Sunday night at 5:30pm in the FBC Davis youth center. On June 19 2025, we will switch from Sundays to Thursdays at 6:30pm.

Come and see what it is like!
